COSEVI calls on drivers to renew licenses
three months before they expire

The Road Safety Council (COSEVI) reported that in February and March a total of 46,500 driver's licenses will expire, so institution is calling on drivers to renew their licenses before they expire.

According to the Council, the transit law allows a license to be renewed 3 months before it expires.

Hugo Jiménez, director of Road Safety, said drivers can renew licenses at any of the 13 locations in the country.

"It is not necessary to have a prior appointment, simply come to the office closest to home or workplace from Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and, with the requirements in order, the license is delivered immediately," said Jiménez.

In addition to the 13 offices of Road Safety Council, a driver’s license renewal can be done in any agency of the Bank of Costa Rica. To renew at the bank, request an appointment at: 800-2272482. The bank charges a $7 commission for this service.

License renewal can be made with a payment of ₡10,000 ($16.4) at any local bank. Present a current medical opinion (the opinion has 6 months validity from the day the doctor issues it) and present your ID.

Foreigners who want their country’s driver’s license to be validated need to go to any of the 13 offices of CONSEVI. Validation of a foreign license and the issuance of a Costa Rican one can be requested by foreigners who have lived in Costa Rica legally for at least three months.

Validation allows the driver to operate the same type of vehicle for which he was registered in his own country. The license will have the same due date and other specifications as the foreign license.

The original driver license must be valid and in good condition.

The applicant must also present the basic medical test results and a document of legal stay in Costa Rica, which can be a residence card, refugee card or work permit.

The last requirement is to pay the cost of the service, ¢5,000 colones ($8.35).

The person interested must have all the requirements and the approved driver’s license will be issued immediately.
