The special drug control police detained nine people Tuesday suspected of being part of a gang of drug traffickers and dealers on the Caribbean coast.
Eight of the suspects arrested are men surnamed: Alfaro-Bustamante, considered the leader, Bustamante-Mena, Alvarado-Cook, Bustamante-Cerdas, Pierson-Bent, Castro-Hidalgo, Ceciliano-Fonseca, Vargas-Aguirre. A woman surnamed Jiménez-Bermúdez was also detained.
The arrests were the result of nine raids on Tuesday in Los Cocos*, Puerto Viejo*, Punta Uva*, Manzanillo* in Limón, Aserrí* and Desamparados* in San Jose.
During Tuesday’s raids, investigators seized properties, luxury cars, boats, firearms, ammunition, drugs, money, machetes, bulletproof vests, radios used for communication, machines used for weighing the drugs and machines used for count money.
Police report that the case began in October 2016 when confidential information received by the police pointed them to an important criminal gang working on the Caribbean coast. The investigation was led by the Directorate of Intelligence and National Security (DIS.)
Results of the investigation indicated that the gang was based in Limón and was involved in large-scale operations involving the importation of drugs from Jamaica. The drugs were brought to Costa Rica by boat and paid for in cash and weapons.

"The leader is a renowned Limón drug trafficker and his closest collaborators were engaged in the preparation, transport, storage, distribution and sale of the drugs," said the police.
The suspects were sent to the cells of the Public Ministry, where the Prosecutor's office will record their statements and then set the pre-trial measures.
