The cost of supplies and uniforms could
be cheaper, says Ministry of Economy

A few days before public schools reopen, the Ministry of Economy said that the price of school supplies and uniforms are lower than last year.

According to the ministry, the results of a study of school supplies and uniforms includes visits to 29 shops in the Metropolitan Area between Jan. 8 and 11.

“The objective of the study is to offer citizens information of interest that allows them to better manage their money, prior to the purchase of tickets to classes.” said the ministry statement.

With respect to the prices in school books, The ministry reported an average cost of the basic package of school books at 18,446 colones ($30.83).

Identical items varied from 5 to 900 colons, less than one U.S. cent to $1.50.

The price of similar items that fulfill the same function, but they are not necessarily of the same brand or quality has a larger variation. The differences oscillate between 460 colones (77 cents) and 30.960 colones ($51.75). The items included pens in blister packs and backpacks.

As part of this study, the inspectors of the ministry made formal complaints at nine of the businesses visited. Operators have 15 working days to correct the detected faults.

After 15 business days a second visit to the store will be made, to ensure that the corrections were made, said the ministry.

Otherwise the owners of the store could pay a fine from 4,462,000 colones ($7,458) to 17,848,000 colones ($29,832), depending on the nature of the fault. In many cases the faults were failures to conform to rules about posting prices.
