Immigration creates a new plan to care for elderly migrants living in rural communities By
the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Daguer Hernández of the General Directorate of Immigration and Foreigners announced the creation of a procedure for the care of elderly migrants living in the country who are abandoned. Elder abandonment is generally defined as the purposeful and permanent desertion of an elderly person. The victim may be left at a hospital, a nursing home or in a public location. Perhaps the abandoning person feels overburdened or believes he or she lacks the resources to care for the victim. The Inter-institutional procedure for the care of people in situation of abandonment will be applied in the care of cases referred by the National Council of the Elderly, known as Conapam. Among the innovations is the use of the Migramovil, which are vehicles with facilities to serve this population in rural areas. The first communities to be serviced by the Migramovil will be Los Chiles*, Upala* and Guatuso* and the northern zone. "There will be a support in the process of migratory regularization of the elderly people served in Migramovil," said Immigration in its statement. It is expected that in the next few days, Immigration will give the dates where people in their communities will be visited by the Migramovil service. The goal of the procedure is to take care of foreign elderly who are illegally in the country and abandoned or homeless. "The attention of vulnerable populations, among which are older adults and, above all, migrants, is the priority," said Hernández. According to the latest Immigration report, the largest number of migrants comes from Nicaragua. Approximately 400,000 Nicaraguans have been registered as legal residents. However, requests for refuge have increased as a consequence of the crisis in that country. In the first semester of 2018, Immigration reported the registration of approximately 10,000 refugee claims from Nicaraguans, although many of them have been identified as people who have been living in Costa Rica for some time and seek to regularize their immigration status in this way. ---------------- Do you know any elderly migrant who could receive the benefit of the new migration protocol?
