Trailer driver union demands resignation of Minister of Education, says government

The union of trailer drivers agreed not to continue with protests if President Alvarado fires Edgar Mora, Minister of Public Education, said the government in a statement on Sunday. According to the Government statement, at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday the representatives of the transport union and those with delegates from regions such as San Carlos*, Limón* and Pérez Zeledón*, completed a dialogue with President Carlos Alvarado and a group of government authorities. "The group maintained as a requirement to keep negotiating with them a list of petitions that the president will guarantee the exit of the Minister of Public Education, Edgar Mora, alleging several reasons, among those on the purchase of drones, unisex bathrooms, and infrastructure problems," said the government in its statement During the negotiations, the Ombudsman's of Costa Rica, Catalina Crespo, and her staff members decided to leave the room as disagreement with the condition stipulated by the unions (the dismissal of Minister of Public Education). For that reason also the representatives of the trailer driver's unions were bothered by the Ombudsman reaction. The union of trailers drivers was represented attorney Héctor Monestel, who stated that the main issue at the meeting was to give a moratorium on the application of VAT tax for transport services. Another sector of the union is demanding the dismissal of Minister Mora as a condition of continuing negotiations with the government. Since last week the trailer drivers have been protesting against the new VA tax, and have joined the protests of the unions of employees of the Ministry of Education. The main highways that have been affected by the trailers' blockades were: route #32* between San José and Limón, route #2* between San Jose and Perez Zeledon in the southern of the country, and route #27* between San José and Puntarenas. Marcos Murcia, president of the Trailer drivers’ union said that if the government does not announce the dismissal of Minister Mora, otherwise, they will continue with the protests on the main roads between the capital and the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.
