Earthquake damages homes and leaves families with no electricity

The National Emergency Commission reported that four houses were structurally damaged and nearly ten thousand families were without electricity after a 6.4 earthquake on Tuesday at 23:23. The houses are located in the towns of Golfito*, Corredores*, Osa* and Pérez Zeledón*, all in the southern part of the country near the border with Panama. The electricity was restored by Wednesday morning. The National Seismological Network reports that nearly 400 aftershocks were registered after the main earthquake. In the first minutes after the initial tremor, many signals receiving devices recorded the magnitude between 6.3 and 6.7 but the final revision determined that the quake magnitude was 6.4. The largest aftershock was registered on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and registered a magnitude of 5.0. The aftershock was located Puerto Armuelles*, Panama. As A.M. Costa Rica reported, the earthquake happened on Tuesday at 23:23 local time and had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was 5 km SE of Gariche in Puerto Armuelles*, Panama at a depth of 26.2 km, according to the National Seismological Network (RSN). Some social media users reported feeling a strong shake but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Infrastructure damage was minimal taking into account the amount of energy released. Marino Protti, a volcanologist at the National Volcanic and Seismological Observatory, stated that the earthquake and its sequence of aftershocks were caused by the subduction of the Cocos Plate under the Caribbean Plate. The Cocos Plate is a young oceanic tectonic plate beneath the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Central America, named for Cocos Island, which rides upon it.
