Only 129 of 53,500 Social Security employees went on strike

According to the Social Security report, only 129 employees went on the strike called by the unions for Tuesday. Of the more than 53,500 Social Security employees, only 129 honored the strike call and did not work. Under those circumstances, a contingency protocol was applied to avoid negative effects in the service given to the patients, the agency said. Social Security union members were asked to strike to support of the Ministry of Education union members who were marching. On June 11, as A.M. Costa Rica reported, the teacher’s union, known as the Association of Teachers of Second Education, conducted a third day of marches in protest against several bills which are under analysis by the deputies in the Legislative Assembly and that have the goal of regulating the union strikes by employees of the government. The first two days of the strike were June 6 and 7. In addition, the union has scheduled one more day of marches next Tuesday. Union protests were held in the Plaza de la Democracia in San José* and in central parks in the provinces of Alajuela, Heredia, Limón, and Guanacaste. June 4 the union announced the marches to protest on two new bills meant to regulate strikes. The deputies are in the process of analyzing two projects: - Project for the Declaration of Essential Public Service. With the declaration by law that public education is an essential and basic service for citizens, employees of the Ministry of Education could not go on strike because the lessons could not be suspended. - Law to provide legal security on the strike and its procedures: This bill seeks to regulate the way in which unions strike and the manner in which public services are affected. The union says that if these scheduled strikes do not achieve the goal of suspending the two law projects, another strike will be held for one week after the teachers return from vacation in July. "If these measures do not take effect, in order to exclude education as an essential public service where the strike is prohibited and other projects, the strike movement will continue after the half-year vacation period, to a strike for one consecutive week," said the union in its statement. The union says that the Ministry of Education set a no-strike condition for dialogue on the issue.
