Eruptions continue in Volcan Rincón de la Vieja By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Specialists of the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica confirm that on Tuesday there was another eruption in the Ricón de la Vieja Volcano*, located in Liberia, Guanacaste. They report that, beginning at 3:43 a.m., there was continuous rash of eruptions recorded for 10 minutes. Due to weather conditions, they could not determine the height of the gas cloud expelled by the volcano. At the close of this edition, specialists had not received any report of lahar material from the crater. On Monday June 10, as A.M. Costa Rica reported, the rescuers of the Red Cross reported that a group of 10 tourists, all Costa Ricans, who had apparently entered illegally in Rincón de la Vieja National Park* since Friday were rescued. The rescuers’ report said that the group of tourists had entered the jungle near the place know as Pilas on Friday and had planned to spend the night in the jungle then leave at dawn on Saturday. However, after wandering for hours they could not find their planned exit point. On Saturday night, after someone called the emergency number, rescuers managed to find the tourists. "All were found in a stable health condition," said the Red Cross in its report. The authorities of the National System of Conservation Areas had announced that since March, there has only been one official entrance to each national park, in order to maintain order when tourists visit and help with the conservation of natural surroundings of the parks. People who are found inside the Park area and entered illegally will be reported. If there is a repeated offender, the person can be taken to the Prosecutor's office for contempt of authority. As an example, in the case of Poás Volcano National Park*, rangers report, from January to May, 30 patrols have already been carried out and 171 people have been found after entering the park illegally. In addition to the legal consequences of entering the volcano area without authorization, there is a great risk due to the instability of the soil, the proximity of the active crater that can generate an eruption at any time, as well as the risk of breathing the air with toxic substances ejected by the volcano. "For the safety of tourists, visits are restricted and controlled, following the instructions of the National Emergency Commission," said the park rangers in their statement. On April 12, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica registered an eruption in the Rincón de la Vieja volcano* that caused a column of gases to rise 1,000 meters above the height of the crater and 2,916 meters above sea level. According to specialists, the eruption had a duration of two minutes and registered major seismic activity. "The seismographs have registered, in the last 24 hours, a considerable number of tremors of short duration and low amplitude," they said. According to the report of the Observatory, the gas eruption was observed and reported by people living in the vicinity of the northern sector of the volcano. Few days before, on April 2nd, more moderate eruptions of the volcano were registered. The observatory reports that on March 29, they recorded a two-minute eruption that sent a column to 600 meters above the crater and 2,516 meters above sea level, "The volcano continues to emit low concentrations of magmatic gases, and we also registered volcanic earthquakes on low frequency." That day at 8:43 p.m. intermittent low-frequency earthquakes were reported. They continued two more days. No ash-fall or sulfur odors were recorded. On Jan. 18th, an eruption of the volcano caused the death of fish and caiman in the area. According to volcanologists, that day at 1:00 a.m. a two-minute eruption was reported. Due to poor visibility and bad weather, the height of the gases that were expelled by the volcano could not be recorded. Half an hour later, a second eruption was generated that caused a flow of material on the edges of the volcano and the flow reached the rivers. This type of flow is called a lahar, a violent flow of pyroclastic material, rocky debris, and water. The material flows from a volcano, typically along a river valley. These eruptive events are phreatomagmatic, that is to say, explosions occur because of the magmatic gas interactions with the active crater's acid lake, and occasionally, small amounts of magma rise and hit the lake, generating even more violent explosions. A witness reported that after the eruption and the sediment in the rivers, the people observed how the fish of the river began to float and that they even collected them in sacks. The dead fish collected had burned gills and yellow and burned scales. A dead caiman was found on the river bank. The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano has been in a stage of intense phreatic activity since 2011 with episodes of eruptions and increased activity since the end of 2015. Access to the volcano is being regulated. In order to enter the parks, visitors must buy tickets online at the National System of Conservation Areas page here* ---------------- Have you visited the volcano or other volcanoes in Costa Rica?
