Government declares Miravalles Volcano zone as National Park By the A.M. Costa Rica staff As part of the celebration of World Environment Day, the government announced Wednesday that the area around the Miravalles Volcano* located in Guanacaste, in the Miravalles National Park Jorge Manuel Dengo would be a new national park. The park is named in honor of Jorge Manuel Dengo one of the great promoters of conservation and a proponent of National Parks in Costa Rica. Who died at age 94 in 2012, was a civil engineer who played a leading role in the creation of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute. This volcano was the only one that did not have the category of national park until now. The 4,300 hectares of land, which are owned by the government, is national park number 29 in Costa Rica. According to Smithsonian Institution, the Miravalles Volcano is an andesitic stratovolcano. The caldera was formed during several major explosive eruptions that produced voluminous dacitic-rhyolitic pyroclastic flows between about 1.5 and 0.6 million years ago. The only reported historical eruptive activity was a small steam explosion in 1946. The tourism institute says that the Miravalles Volcano is famous for having the highest peak in Guanacaste and that the volcano offers some amazing geological activity. Hot sulfur springs, steam spewing fissures and bubbling mud pools can be found all around the area. ---------------- Have you visited the Miravalles Volcano area?
