The Municipality of San José inaugurated the first plant nursery in the capital. It was financed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and cost $32,000 and was built through the Productive Landscapes program. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is the United Nations' global development network. It advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build better lives. The plant nursery consists of two 400 m2 greenhouses, an air irrigation system that saves water consumption and a security fence for the perimeter. Located in the town of Pavas*, in the South of San José. This plant nursery will produce 16,000 trees and shrubs at the same time to plant the parks and green areas of the capital and to reforest the edges of the María Aguilar River. The area of the plant nursery is 6,000 m2 and tree species are already being produced such as yellow bark, savanna oak, and olives, among others. Decorative species such as magnolias, palm trees, and ornamental trees are also growing. Johnny Araya Monge, mayor of San José, said "the importance of Productive Landscapes is that the conservation of biodiversity is guaranteed." Kifah Sasa, UNDP official, said that the Productive Landscapes program "helps in sustainable development and encourages the inhabitants of this area to enjoy the natural resources that surround them."
