In the U.S. community, Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May creating a three-day break as Memorial Day weekend. For expats and Ticos, there are a couple of events this weekend on the occasion of Memorial Day. In Marina Pez Vela*, in Quepos, Puntarenas, the “Pura Vida Memorial Day Inshore Classic" will be held over the weekend. "It is a fun event for all ages that capitalizes on the bountiful inshore fishery available along the shores and rugged coastline of Pacific Costa Rica," said the organizers on their statement. "The main tournament is a 1-day shootout where teams can win awards & some serious cash by scoring the most roosterfish release points, or weighing-in the heaviest trio of coastal gamefish." This tournament also offers a half-day Kid's Fishing Derby where tournament teams are encouraged to support the youth fishing movement by taking a kid fishing in a fun tournament atmosphere. The three-day tournament starts on Friday at 3 p.m., continues on Saturday from 7 a.m. and ends on Sunday with activities starting at 8 a.m. For more information on these three days of the tournament at Marina Pez Vela, organizers can be reached at: 506- 2774-9000 If you want to enjoy a good Tico - American football game in commemoration of Memorial Day, the Costa Rica Football League invites you to watch the playoffs of the 2019 Championship. The final match between the teams Leones FC and Toros FC, is on Sunday, May 26 at the Municipal Stadium El Labrador*, in the town of Coronado in San Jose. The game starts at 1 p.m. but the stadium will be open from 12 noon. Tickets rate is $ 1.75 per person. Same price for parking. More information can be reached with the Costa Rica Football League on the phone: 506 8816 0922, email: ligacrfl@gmail.com or the league Facebook page on this link* An important fact is that this Monday the U.S. Embassy and Consular Section will be closed. The diplomatic headquarters will be open again on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are not U.S. citizen, we would like to tell you a little about the history of Memorial Day. It is a federal holiday in the United States and federal and state offices will be closed. It is seen as the unofficial start of summer, and as such, it is a popular holiday to enjoy with outdoor events and picnics in the U.S. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service for the United States. Many cities have laid claim to have begun Memorial Day, though President Lyndon Johnson has officially declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the birthplace of Memorial Day in May 1966. While there is some dispute as to the origin of the day, it was first was observed on May 30, 1868, under proclamation by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first official observation included placing flowers on graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. By 1890, it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead in separate days after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 up to 1971 when the National Holiday Act of 1971, designated the last Monday in May to be Memorial Day. This year, official Memorial Day will be on Monday 27. ------------- Do you do something special on Memorial Day in Costa Rica? We would like to know your thoughts on this story.
