Reto Cero Emisiones (zero emissions challenges) is a project during which 19,000 students from 25 public high schools who are studying car repair and electronics will build an electric competition vehicle for their high school from scratch.

The project was created and supported by the Automobile Club of Costa Rica and approved by the Ministry of Public Education and other government institutions.

Students will receive a kit of materials with which to design and build their electric car. For this, they will have technical training from the National Learning Institute.

Other students of the school may participate in the construction of the car even they are from other technical careers such as accounting, graphic design, among others.

The challenge involves teams of four students which must include one female.

The team will participate in various driving and performance tests that will be carried out at the Parque Viva autodrome* in La Guácima in Alajuela.

First lady, Claudia Dobles announced the contest. She is promoting zero-emissions technologies.

"We are setting goals where a fundamental component is the electrification of transport. Hence the need to create and encourage the potential of these young people for their future work as professionals," said first lady Dobles.

Students who win the challenge will be awarded the Trophy Roy Valverde Cup, in honor of the award-winning Costa Rican driver and car builder.

Roy Valverde, 68, was the winner of the Costa Rican three hour car race in 1975, has competed in many races outside of Costa Rica. In the U.S. he competed in the 24 hour Daytona race, the 6 hour race in Riverside, and 6 hour race in Watkins Glen. His last race was the GT of the Americas in Venezuela in 1977. He is a member of the Costa Rican Motor Racing Hall of Fame.

There will also be prizes in several categories and the team that wins the first place will win a solar plant for the high school.

The program hopes that the community where the high school is located will get involved with the students.
