The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to support a search for a peaceful solution to the crisis in Venezuela. "The government is following closely the events registered early this morning in Venezuela and reiterates that any solution to the crisis must come from Venezuelans themselves and through peaceful means," the ministry said in its statement. “As a nation of peace and democracy without an army, Costa Rica calls for a de-escalation of violence and bloodshed, while advocating a political solution and creating the necessary conditions for the holding of free, transparent and credible elections.” "Once again, we support Juan Guaidó as president in charge of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," the government said in its statement. Opposition leader Juan Guaidó took a bold step to revive his movement to seize power in Venezuela, taking to the streets Tuesday to call for a military uprising that drew quick support from the Trump administration and fierce resistance from forces loyal to embattled socialist Nicolas Maduro. The violent street battles that erupted in parts of Caracas were the most serious challenge yet to Maduro's rule. Still, the rebellion, dubbed "Operation Freedom," seemed to have garnered only limited military support. U.N. chief António Guterres is calling for both government and opposition forces in Venezuela to exercise "maximum restraint" amid reports of a possible attempted coup and renewed violence on the streets. His spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told journalists in New York that the focus needs to be on the well-being of the people of Venezuela. “I have called for everything to be done to avoid violence and restore calm,” and the Secretary-General said he was monitoring events closely with Tuesday, and with great concern. U.N. humanitarian agencies ramped up their presence in the country over the last few months, amid strife between President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who has declared himself interim president.
