Costa Rica will host 2020 World Tourism Summit

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute announced that the country will host the World Tourism and Related Services Summit 2020. This designation was confirmed by the World Tourism Organization in Tunisia, Africa.

Alberto López, General Manager of the Institute, said the venue for a meeting of this global level is a privilege for the tourism sector, "in this meeting we address issues as diverse as the latest trends in sustainable tourism, adventure, and well-being, where Costa Rica has positioned its leadership in the world in recent years."

The World Meeting will be held in June 2020, with an estimated participation of at least 25 countries that will discuss issues such as accommodation, tour operation, protected areas, tour guides, transportation, and diving, among others.

Representatives of hotels, tourism chambers, representatives of governments will participate in the meeting.

According to the Institute, Costa Rica's participation in these international forums contributes to the positioning of the country as a model of sustainable tourism.


Institute statistics stated that Costa Rica reserves 25 percent of its territory in conservation areas and national parks. It also holds 5 percent of the planet's biodiversity.

"Tourism is considered one of the main engines of the economy and one of the elements that drive the economic reactivation throughout the country of both medium and small enterprises, representing 8.2 percent of gross domestic product and generating 211,000 jobs last year, the income of more than 3 million tourists was registered," said the institute in its statement.
