Social Security is in the process of training personnel from all over the country to improve the care of transgender patients receiving hormone therapy.

According to Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD),  Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex. Some transgender people identify as transsexual if they desire medical assistance to transition from one sex to another.

Dr. Milena González, from the Human Factor Development Area, said that from April 3 to May 15, training for 200 specialists have been planned, among them doctors, endocrinologists, urologists, gynecologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and administrative staff.

"This activity offers tools to the medical professional for the comprehensive care of the transsexual person who consults for hormone therapy at the first level of care," said Dr. González. "As well as the professionals of clinical psychology, psychiatry, endocrinology of the second and third level of care, responsible for providing trans-people with the respective interventions for hormone therapy."

Since 2017, the Social Security Board of Directors has been drafting the therapeutic care protocol for transgender people. This was approved last year.

The transgender patient management protocol will begin in June. When the patient must request an appointment with a general practitioner, then a second appointment will be attended by a clinical psychologist, and in the end, a third appointment with the department of endocrinology for the application of hormone therapy.

Dr. Terwes adds that during the training for the specialists, in addition to acquiring scientific knowledge about the management of this health event, it is expected that decent and humane treatment will be given to the patients of the lesbian, gay, bisexual community, and transgender persons.

According to Amnesty International, 1.5 million transgender people live in the European Union, making up 0.3 percent of the population. One effort to quantify the population gave a "rough estimate"  also 0.3 percent of adults in the U.S. are transgender.
