The government announces free Wi-Fi in 515 public spaces |

On Wednesday, President Carlos Alvarado inaugurated the first 23 of 515 points of free Wi-Fi access in the city of Pavas*, San José. "With this project, we are moving forward an interconnected, high-end, secure, universal model that puts our country at the forefront of technological developments and within our reach," said President Alvarado. This program goal to provide free WiFi in public areas of the country is led by the Ministry of Technology and financed by the National Telecommunications Fund. WiFi will be available 24/7 in parks, squares, train stations, public libraries, and civic centers. Each zone will have access to 100 Mbps, with a speed per user 6 Mbps and has security filters to prevent access to pornography or other violent content. The Ministry's estimates that more than 100 thousand students will benefit from access to the Eduroam network of Public Universities. Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Initially, the service was joined by institutions in the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Portugal, Croatia and the United Kingdom. |
As A.M. Costa Rica reported on Feb 19th, the government also announced that free Wi-Fi service will be provided in 2021, in the national parks. The main reason is to offer this service to hundreds of national and foreign tourists. Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, Minister of Environment said that "there were more than two million visits per year in the Protected Wild Areas." The free Wi-Fi will be available for a period of seven years after it is finally installed in 2021. "It is expected by 2021 to have the service in Protected Wild Areas, with coverage in an approximate area of 75 square meters, which will support simultaneous navigation of 100 people, with a speed per user of 6 Mbps," said the ministry in its statement. ----------
