The U.S. and Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) congratulated the government on its recently approved Law #20.389 on the Promotion of Social Equality for Women and for the Protection of Equal Pay for Men and Women This new law creates an inter-institutional commission whose purpose is to ensure that the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) incorporates a salary equality indicator that allows evaluating, periodically, the reasons for inequality between men and women and the respective measures to be taken about that inequality. According to AmCham, more than 70 percent of companies have anti-discrimination policies, but only 20 percent of them comply with the policies, according to a survey conducted last year by the Chamber, with the support of Deloitte. Data from the latest report from the State of the Nation also revealed that in the participation and occupation rates from 2010 to 2017, there are differences of around 30 percentage points in favor of men, while the unemployment rate is 3.5 points higher among women. In addition, the matter of motherhood also affects working women, since a woman without children has 1.2 times more opportunities than the one with a child and 1.6 times more than a mother of three. According to Elías Soley, president of AmCham, "by equity we understand the equality of opportunities for all people, so that they can live a life where their abilities are valued and taken advantage of and they are not excluded because of age, gender, condition socioeconomic, etc." The Chamber says that in Costa Rica, women face a triple barrier in terms of their participation in the labor force: in access to employment, in the valuation of their work, and in salary. |

AmCham used as a reference for the achievement of equality between salaries of men and women, the case of Philip Morris International, which recently became the first international company to receive the global certification in salary equality, awarded by EQUAL - SALARY Foundation. The EQUAL-SALARY certification methodology verifies that an equal payment is made for all employees for the same work, regardless of gender. ---------- Have you heard about any case of unequal salaries between men and women for the same work?
