The campaign to increase corals in the Golfo Dulce has started |

The foundation Raising Coral and the film company Pelagos presented the campaign ‘1000 Corals for Costa Rica.’ Its mission is restoring the coral zone of Golfo Dulce. The campaign aims to cultivate coral fragments in underwater nurseries and then transplant them onto degraded reefs. The Ministry of the Environment reports that, in recent years, the cultivation of 3 coral reef-forming species has been achieved in Golfo Dulce*. The Costa Rican coast shelters reef structures that are extremely important for the development of marine-coastal ecosystems. Costa Rica has great biodiversity on both coasts, with species that play a fundamental role as "ecosystem engineers," key species for the development and growth of other living beings. Coral restoration is the most powerful tool to ensure the future of coral reefs, which provide a sustainable activity for coastal communities, mainly the attraction of tourists. These vast ecosystems determine the availability of habitat and food for more than 25 percent of the marine life known so far. Sadly, we have lost more than 30 percent of the world's coral reefs. Raising Coral has managed to develop and sustain a program in the Golfo Dulce* for more than two years. They believe in their capacity to cultivate and transplant 1000 corals. They will grow at least 1000 corals (multiple species) and plant them at reef sites that have been previously damaged. The Campaign kicks off at the Cine Magaly in San José with a premiere of the documentary "Symbiosis" by Costa Rica's film company Pelagos, which follows the Raising Coral team, both above and below the water in their coral nursery and on the reef. The Campaign will also include the release of children's book "The Magic Coils," by Costa Rican author, Lara Rios. |

The cost of this campaign is $35,000 and includes outfitting and training a few local workers to help with nursery maintenance.
