U.S. Embassy supports Costa Rican scholarships for English language studies in the U.S. |

The U.S. Embassy reports that seventy students will have the opportunity to learn English thanks to the English Access Micro-scholarship Program. After a two-year intensive English program, 40 students will finally graduate with an advanced intermediate level of English proficiency. Then 30 new students will also have the opportunity to study English for the next two years in addition to developing soft skills through NGO Youth 360. In this way, the U.S. Embassy supports Alliance for Bilingualism Initiative (ABI) implemented at Cotepecos High School and at technical high schools in Escazú*, Hatillo*, Pavas*, La Carpio*, Purral* and San Sebastián*. The U.S. Embassy has sponsored the English Access Micro-scholarship program in Costa Rica since October 2009. To date, 1,200 students have benefitted from this initiative, learning English at the Binational Center, the Technological Foundation and/or the National University. In 2012, the U.S. Embassy created a special scholarship program for students at Costa Rica’s Scientific High Schools. The Embassy created this program to give exceptional Costa Rican students an opportunity to develop their English skills while learning more about U.S. culture. This year, five students received the scholarship, which means they will have the opportunity to study at a high school in the United States for one year. This year’s winners are: -Daniela Alvarado Andrade, San Pedro Science High School. -Tatiana González González, San Carlos Science High School. -José Antonio Ortega Padilla, Cartago Science High School. -Chelsea Rodríguez Alvarado, Puntarenas Science High School. |

Currently, the CRUSA Foundation finances the scholarships and the American Field Service (AFS) manages the program. In her remarks to the scholarship winners, Ambassador Sharon Day said, “you represent the new generation of Costa Rica’s leaders and for this, you deserve our support and we will continue supporting you so that more young promises from this country have the opportunity to study in the United States.” -------- Do you know any student who would like to apply for a scholarships to learn the English language in the U.S.?
