President inaugurates new school in Tibás |

Rica staff
President Carlos Alvarado inaugurated the new primary school in the community of Colima in Tibás*. The new facility, Rafel Vargas School, replaces a school that was demolished to make way for the new North Traffic Circle*. "In a few months, the new Rafael Vargas Quirós School was built in Colima in Tibás. The space of the old school will be used for the construction of the longest overpass that is built in our country," said President Alvarado. The new school has an area of 450 square meters with 28 classrooms for 350 students, plus 4 classrooms for preschool students, a space for sports, a library, a computer lab and a robotics lab, a security officer booth and an area for parents who are waiting for their children. The old school has to be demolished to make way for the new road construction. That project is new 4.5-kilometer-long road will complete the Traffic Circle ring that connects the area from the city of La Uruca* to the community on Calle Blancos*. According to the Ministry of Public Works, the new traffic circle cost $163 million and was financed with a loan from The Central American Bank for Economic Integration. The Ministry of Education has reported that there are other schools in poor condition that need to be replaced. One is the Ascensión Esquivel, in Liberia in Guanacaste* which was made of clay and dates back to 1904. |

A lack of maintenance and an infestation of bats caused the final closure of the building. The bats and their droppings were deemed a health risk and the students had to be relocated to another building. The new building, a rental, has 22 classrooms, where the children started classes on February 18, twelve days after the official day of the beginning of classes.
