U.S. donates more than $40 million to help fight crimes and drug trafficking |

 By the A.M. Costa Rica staff According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Costa Rica will receive a donation from the U.S., for $40.7 million, already approved by Congress. "President Donald Trump signed the budget, which includes funds for International Operations of the State Department and which contains a package of $40.7 million dollars in security cooperation for Costa Rica, which implies an increase of 33 percent more than last year." said the ministry's statement. According to the ministry, this increase has been made by the support of U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica and efforts to fight against drug trafficking and crime by the Ministry of Public Security. At the end of January, Michael Soto, minister of Public Security visited the U.S. Southern Command in Miami to meet with the commander, Navy Adm. Craig Faller. Soto was at the headquarters of what is known as SOUTHCOM to meet with Faller and command leadership to discuss regional security and cooperation, and the visit was his first to the command, the U.S. command said in a statement. “Costa Rica's security partnership with the United States includes cooperation in countering illicit trafficking and training engagements." said SOUTHCOM. |

One of the last donations by the U.S. to Costa Rica was three vessels in April 2018.
