The transit police announced that officers will carry out operations to increase their presence in 63 schools during the beginning of the school year on Wednesday, February 6.

Among the schools where there will be more presence of transit officials are those in Limón*, Heredia*, San Carlos*, Alajuela*, Cartago*, Guanacaste* and San Jose*.

According to German Marín-Sandí, director of the Traffic Police, "the choice of these schools areas is based on technical criteria, mainly related to the location of the school in high traffic routes, as well as accident statistics."

However, Marin confirmed that it does not mean that other schools will not have a presence of traffic police."

According to the traffic police, the strategy is based on prevention, with the presence of officers in charge of monitoring:

- Entrance and exit of students.

- Respect of maximum speed limits.

- No parking in the school zone, mainly on sidewalks.

- Students must cross at the corners and through the pedestrian traffic lights.

In addition, Marin confirmed that the operation will also fine drivers for the illegal transportation of students, driving without a license and disrespect for traffic law.

"It seems incredible, but even with the presence of officers, many park inappropriately, in fact, last year we fined 449 people during the opening of schools. Even worse, we fined drivers who do not respect the stop sign, or who exceed the maximum speed, or carry children without protection devices, " said Marín.

According to the traffic police, in 2018, were fined 1,210 drivers for illegal transportation of students, and 678 drivers were fined for speeding. For that reason this year, there will be more officers at the entrances of the schools between February 6 and 22.
