|
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs accepted the invitation of the European Union to form part of the "International Contact Group" for Venezuela. The European group is comprised of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Holland, Italy and Sweden but the group also includes Uruguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, as well as another country that will be announced soon. According to Federica Mogherini, High Commissioner and Vice President of the European Commission, the "International Contact Group" has been formally constituted and will probably meet next week in Latin America. "The group will help create trust and the conditions that are necessary for a credible process to emerge in line with the relevant provisions of the Venezuelan Constitution, allowing Venezuelans to determine their future through the holding of new elections, with all the guarantees," said Mogherini. According to the Ministry, it has an inescapable duty to contribute to the execution of all kinds of efforts so that, by means of negotiation and inclusive dialogue, and as soon as possible, the constitutional order in Venezuela can be re-established and a path of peace, democracy and reconstruction of its prosperity can be begun. The solution to the serious crisis has, as its main actors, Venezuelans themselves said the group. The European Parliament recognized Juan Guaidó as the legitimate interim President of Venezuela on Thursday, in accordance with the Venezuelan Constitution. E.U. Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini and member states also recognize Guaidó "as the only legitimate interim president of the country until new, transparent and credible presidential elections can be called in order to restore democracy." In a resolution, adopted with 439 votes to 104 and 88 abstentions, the parliament reiterate its full support of the National Assembly, Venezuela's only legitimate democratic body whose powers need to be restored and respected, including the rights and safety of its members. Following the recognition of Juan Guaidó, “the E.U. and its member states should also recognize representatives appointed by the legitimate authorities,” said the Chamber. The E.U. condemns the fierce repression and violence, resulting in killings and casualties and demands the de facto Venezuelan authorities to halt all human rights violations, to hold those responsible for them to account, and to ensure that all fundamental freedoms and human rights are fully respected. |

European Parliament recognized Juan Guaidó
as the legitimate interim President of Venezuela. In this regard, they support the call by the U.N. Secretary-General for an independent and full investigation to be carried out into the killings. They also denounced the detention of journalists covering the situation in Venezuela, among them several E.U. nationals, and called for their immediate release. Juan Guaidó, president of the opposition-controlled national assembly, declared himself president of Venezuela on January 23rd, in an attempt to oust President Nicolás Maduro. Guaidó was promptly recognized as the legitimate President of Venezuela by several countries, including the U.S., Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Canada. On behalf of the E.U., Federica Mogherini declared support for the National Assembly and called for free, transparent and credible presidential elections to be held urgently, warning that, in the absence of an announcement over the next days, "the EU will take further action, including action on the issue of recognition of the country's leadership." According to the E.U., Venezuela is in a deep social, economic and democratic crisis. More than three million people have left the country and the inflation rate exceeds 1,650 000%. ---- Could Maduro leaves Venezuela peacefully? We would like to know your thoughts on this story.
