Ministry of Education defined strategy to recover lessons lost during teachers strike |

The new school year begins in February and the ministry has sent schools a set of guidelines to help them recover from the lessons lost during the teachers’ strike of 2018. Edgar Mora, Minister of Education, stated that "we cannot guarantee that we will cover all this learning because there are time limitations.” He went on to add that teachers use the guidelines to develop the information lost last year but that families should “play a watchful role in this process,” and ask for accountability. The document contains strategies, instructions and recommendations so that teachers can diagnose the contents that were not addressed in the third quarter of 2018 due to the strike and an elaborate plan for the inclusion of these contents in the three quarters of 2019. According to the Ministry, to achieve that goal each teacher should review the work report left by the last teacher who was in charge of the group, make a diagnosis of the real knowledge of the group and, finally, define how the subject will be developed by the students. A review carried out by the ministry found that in the third quarter of 2018, 702 sections of material corresponding to all the subjects had to be addressed, of which 285 are considered essential. At the high school level, 350 sections of material should be seen in different subjects, of which 247 are essential to continuing education at the next level. Among the administrative measures that should be taken to recover what was lost because of the strike are: extension of the enrollment period until February, the formation of groups as similar to the previous year as possible and the realization of expansion tests for those who require it. The National Association of Teachers was on strike for 88 days from September to December 2018. The union representatives say that the 88 days of strike have been difficult for union members. |

"We have been under strong pressure, mobilizations, and attacks from different sectors, for those reasons they [the teachers] deserve and need a period of recovery," said the union in a statement. In Costa Rica, there are three main unions of employees of the Education Ministry: The National Association of Teachers (ANDE) that yesterday announced the end of the strike. - The Costa Rican Education Workers Union (SEC) that had already ended its strike on December 3. - The Association of Teachers of High Schools (APSE) which continues to be on strike. The unions have been on strike to protest the new tax law which has been approved. ----
