President inaugurates remodeling for more than $5 million at Drake airport |

The President Carlos Alvarado inaugurated Wednesday the improved facilities of the airport at Drake in the Osa Peninsula*. This remodeling cost 3.4 billion colones, some $5,672,529, with resources from the General Directorate of Civil Aviation. President Alvarado said that the government will continue with improvement projects at other rural airports. "We are focused on the economic reactivation of the southern zone, and that is why we continue to advance at the best airports of Palmar Sur*, Golfito* and Pérez Zeledón*." According to the General Directorate of Aviation, the improvements were made in the airport area of the area of 260 m2 to accommodate about 162 people. The specific extension of the airstrip, 10 to 18 meters wide and 770 to 1,004 meters long, was also carried out, along with the construction of a parking platform for aircraft and the improvement of security strips and perimeter fence. The Drake Bay region is an important but isolated tourist destination. In addition to the improve of Drake airport, Guillermo Hoppe, general director of Civil Aviation, said "will continue to improve the other airports in the southern zone and the rest of the country." The improvement plans at others airports are: In Palmar Sur*: Reconstruction of the structure of the airstrip, remodeling and expansion of the airport, parking area, improvement of the security strips, horizontal demarcation and lighting of the runway. This aerodrome is in the final stage of remodeling with an investment of more than 1.5 billion colones ($1,910,307). In Golfito*: Remodeling and expansion of the airport and improvement of the airstrip, with an investment of 1 billion colones ($1,835,230). |
