drug traffic and use of false dollars

Agents of the Judicial Investigating Organization, made four raids Wednesday and captured four suspects:

A man identified as Henry Murillo-Gamboa, 56, who holds Colombian nationality but was nationalized as a Costa Rican.

The second man is a brother of the first, identified as José Murillo-Gamboa, 51, also Colombian but naturalized as Costa Rican.

The third man was identified as Renzo Giraldo 44, of Colombian nationality.

And the final suspect is a Costa Rican woman identified as Carmen Abrahams-Campbell, 52.

The four are accused of international drug trafficking and the use of counterfeit dollars.

According to the judicial report, the raids were made in Moravia*, Tibas*, San Cayetano* in San Jose and another in Limon*. Investigators seized $32,000 of which $20,000 are counterfeit.

Also confiscated were two weapons, a package with half a pound of marijuana and documents that will be used as evidence in the case, said the report.

According to Walter Espinoza, general director of the Judicial Investigating Organization, the case began in May 2017, after a small plane crashed in the town of Palmar Sur in Osa*.

"In May we found documents inside the plane that referred to two men with the nicknames Henry and Gordo. Later, in July 2017 in Quepos*, we seized a truck that was transporting 684 kilos of cocaine. The truck was being followed by another vehicle, whose occupants were guarding the cargo. That vehicle was registered in the name of the suspect José Henry Murillo-Gamboa. With that information we made the investigation that led us to do the arrests today " said Espinoza.

According to the investigation, the organization of drug traffickers in Costa Rica has links with another organization in Colombia. The son of José Henry Murillo-Gamboa also was arrested in Cartagena in Colombia as a drug trafficking suspect.

"This criminal organization detained today, had links in Colombia, since the leader was captured by agents of the DEA in Cartagena in November 2018. The leader identifies himself as Eduard Murillo-Angulo, who is the son of Jose Henry Murillo Gamboa, and also was in charge of shipping drug from Colombia to Costa Rica," said Espinoza. The DEA is the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

According to Espinoza, the suspects are accused of trafficking cocaine and marijuana between Colombia, Costa Rica and the United States. They also stored and sold drugs in Costa Rica, he said.

According to the investigation, the two brothers received, stored and exported the drugs, the man identified as Giraldo was in charge of the security and transportation of the drug, and the woman helped in the storage process.

The four suspects were placed in charge of the Public Ministry where they will be investigated and await the prosecutors to present the request for precautionary measures. Then a judge of the Judicial Circuit of San Jose will determine their legal status.

If those nationalized suspects are found guilty, should the government eliminate the Costa Rican status? We would like to know your thoughts on this story. Send your comments to: news@amcostarica.com
