Due to the constant activity of the volcanos Rincon de la Vieja in Guanacaste*, Turrialba in Cartago* and Poás in Alajuela*, the National Emergency Commission urged Tuesday that the public respect the access restrictions that have been implemented near the craters. According to the park rangers, during the holidays, people put their lives and the lives of the rangers at risk by entering the sites near the volcanos which were in constant eruption. Visitors go to the volcanos by unpermitted routes and in hours outside the daily schedule, the rangers said. Violators can be fined, they added. Turrialba* already has anti-ballistic shelters. Due to the constant activity of the volcano, seven temporary shelters were built as a measure to minimize the volcanic danger. The construction of these shelters are for the protection for the workers of the Emergency Commission, the National Seismological Network, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory and the Electricity Institute. These specialists frequently climb to the top to maintain the volcanic surveillance equipment and communication towers, which are within the radius of danger from rocks thrown out of the volcano. The shelters were made by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, following a bunker model that was built more than 54 years ago at the Irazú volcano. The construction model is with steel arc beams and thick corrugated sheet steel covers, all welded and protected with anti-corrosive paint. According to Guillermo Alvarado, volcanologist of the emergency commission, "volcanic eruptions can not be avoided, but the risk can be minimized, that is, trying to reduce vulnerability. However, the protection of these shelters is partial since before the fall of large stones or a large eruption, the structures are not enough. " |
