Drivers can now take care of vehicles
seized, plates or fines at CONSEVI offices

The Road Safety Council (known as CONSEVI) has announced that it has reopened the offices after the holidays and that drivers can now do the paperwork necessary to recover vehicles and plates, or pay fines.

The institution has been closed for the holidays since December 21.

The institution reports that to recover seized cars, drivers must have several requirements solved  such as: pay the technical inspection (known as Riteve), pay the car circulation tax known as Marchamo, not having fines awaiting payments, pay the cost for the carriage of the vehicle and paid the fine for car custody.

Carlos Rivas, Legal Director of COSEVI, confirms that in order to release a car the owner must pay the rate for car custody of ¢3,985 colones ($6.6), plus pay the cost per car carriage of ¢1,149 colones per kilometer ($1.9).

As example, if the car was seized in December 21, and the driver requests for its release today January 8, the cost of custody is the custody rate is $118.71. If the carriage of that car from the place was seized to the CONSEVI offices , was 10 kilometers the rate for transport is $19.

The law allows a period of 10 working days to present the claim and pay the fines, so the days on which the institution was closed, should not be taken into account.

For example, a person who received a fine on Friday, December 21, the first of the ten days starts on Monday, January 7.

The institution has been closed for the holidays
since December 21.

According to the Traffic Law, all fines not paid will be active for a period of 7 years. Also, in order to renew the drivers’ license all fines must be paid.

Officials can seize a car when the Marchamo or Riteve was not updated, or for illegal parking, speeding or drunk driving.

The last report of  the transit police, from January to October 2018, showed that more than 1,700 drivers were sent to court for drunk driving.
