|
A.M. Costa Rica staff
The latest Red Cross statistics on deaths in accidents, show an increase from the 1,346 accidental deaths in 2017 to the 1,428 accidental deaths in 2018, an increase of 82 people. There was also an increase of 24,000 in the number of accidents responded to by the organization. In 2017, the organization attended 374,410 accidents. That number has increased to 398,410 accidents in 2018. The main types of emergencies were: traumatic emergencies, falls, respiratory problems, emergencies related to pregnant women, heart problems, and car crashes. Jim Batres, Sub National Director of Emergencies, suggests that neglect is the common denominator of accidents. "We have been very insistent that the general public and tourists should avoid overconfidence. That can help us reduce the accident rate." These are the main recommendations that specialists give to tourists: If you are going to vacation in rivers, lagoons, beaches or seas: -If you cannot swim, do not go to pools or the sea. -Do not enter the water suddenly in places you do not know. -Before diving, first check the depth. -If you are going to swim in a natural place check for obstacles such as branches, algae and rocks. -After each meal, stay out of the water at least 2 hours, otherwise you are in risk of becoming congested. -When walking on the beach, check that there are no residues of cans, glass and other sharp objects that can cause painful wounds or contusions. -Avoid all kinds of objects in the water. -If you do not have experience in handling water vehicles, do not use them. -You should always inform yourself about water currents, riptides and the presence of dangerous animals by talking with locals or the Red Cross. -Never leave your children alone near the sea, rivers, lagoons or pools. -Maintain hydration with fruit juices and water. -Keep more than tube of sunscreen lotion and insect repellent handy to protect yourself and children from sunburn and mosquito bites. If you are going to make long road trips: -Before going on vacation in your vehicle, remember to check brakes, lights, gasoline, oil, coolant, and tires. -Always carry fire extinguishing equipment in your vehicle. -If you drive, do not drink any type of alcoholic beverage or use drugs or medicines that may affect your senses. -Plan your trip well - know alternate routes in case of a problem on the road. -Never drive at high speed. -Avoid driving at night. |

If you are going to vacation on the mountain: -Stay hydrated with fruit juice and water. -Keep more than tube of sunscreen lotion and insect repellent handy to protect yourself and children from sunburn and mosquito bites. -Ask about the characteristics of forests or mountainous areas. Inform the park rangers or Red Cross staff where you will be hiking. -Always have two maps of the area and mark the route to be taken in both documents, one you will take with you and the other is to give to someone who can report to the rangers where you are in case you become lost. -Tell someone you trust the place (hotel, vacation camp, or other) where you will be camping and provide the full contact information for the area. -Carry a first aid kit. -Always carry spotlights and batteries, matches, candies, and clothing with striking colors that is suitable for the type of weather. -Carry the charged cell phone and an extra battery. -If you are in a group, take cell phone turns, so you can optimize the battery life and keep at least one device turned on in case of emergencies. -Never go hiking if you do not know the area. -Never go hiking alone. -Never drink alcohol or use drugs that may affect you in case of emergency. The Red Cross rangers advise visitors to take preventive measures to avoid accidents that can cause injury or death. ---- Are these way too many preventive measures?
