Government has installed public internet
in 68 of 515 programmed places

According to the latest progress of the Connected Public Space Program of the Ministry of Technology, the free internet service has been installed in 68 public spaces of the 515 sites programmed in the country.

The program, whose objective is to provide free access to the Internet service in public community spaces, is financed by the National Telecommunications Fund and administered by the Superintendency of Telecommunications.

Some of the places where there is public internet is in Guanacaste at 13 parks in Santa Cruz*, Carrillo* and Nicoya*, among others.

In the Central Valley, there is a free connection in places like Belén* in Heredia, Escazú* and Santa Ana*.

"We work to achieve an interconnected, high-end, secure, universal model that puts our country at the forefront of technological developments and within the reach of each of the inhabitants of our country," said President Carlos Alvarado at the inauguration of the program in April.

"We continue to make concrete progress with the Hogares Conectados project in collaboration with SUTEL in order to provide more and better access to the Internet in public places," said Luis Adrian Salazar, minister of Telecommunications, speaking of the Superintendency of Telecommunications. "The idea is to continue connecting more communities."

According to the goal of the program, free internet will be available in 515 public spaces of which 419 are parks and plazas, 28 are train stations and 61 are libraries, among others.

According to data from the ministry, the free internet service has a cost of more than $61 million shared with three telecommunications companies.

- Radiography and the Costa Rican Electrical Institute work with a budget of $26.6 million for the installation of the Internet in the Central Valley.

- The Telecable company was assigned a budget of $15.6 million for the coverage in the southern zone.

- The company Coopeguanacaste has a budget of $19.9 million to provide coverage in the province of Guanacaste.

These companies are in the process of installing 100 mbps internet, with a speed per user of 6 mbps (upload and download) and have security filters to prevent access to pornography or other violent content, the government said.
