Business zone in Alajuela will open 1,500 new jobs

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Representatives of the business zone Coyol Free Zone, located in the town Coyol* in Alajuela, announced on Tuesday that it will open 1,500 new jobs during the next 6 months.

The information was released by Álvaro Carballo, president of Coyol Free Zone, during the visit made to this park by President Carlos Alvarado.

"Our commitment is the generation of quality employment and good salary," said Carballo. "We work on strategies that allow us to be a link between companies and candidates, so we will continue to promote training and recruitment initiatives such as our program Unete a Coyol (be part of Coyol), which allows generating well-being for more than 14,000 employees who work in the companies that are in Coyol Free Zone."

According to Carballo, the estimate of 1,500 new jobs was made with data obtained from the recruitment needs this year of companies located in this business area.

The jobs that will be open are for mechanics, technicians, production supervisors, engineers, and business managers, among others.

Several companies that export medical equipment are located in this business area.

According to figures from the Foreign Trade Promoter, in 2018 Costa Rica exported $3.2 billion in medical devices, of which 63 percent were exported by companies located in the Coyol Free Zone business zone.

On Tuesday, as A.M. Costa Rica reported, President Carlos Alvarado announced that as of June, more than 3,000 jobs will been created while the government simplifies procedures for companies.

The president said that the major issue for Costa Rica is the generation of more jobs and called on the entire population to join this crusade to facilitate the conditions that allow the economy to be reactivated. “That is the priority we all have as a country,” said President Alvarado.

The president signed the decree that creates the National Employment System (SNE), a public organization that will coordinate all the employment services that the government gives to generate new jobs especially to people who are in a more vulnerable condition

The SNE will be headed by a council made up of representatives of the government, workers and private companies.

In addition, the National Employment Agency was created. It will be in charge of the National Apprenticeship Institute, which will have branches throughout the country that attend to both to people and companies.

The SNE will give support to people who are looking for a job, making a record of a database of candidates, giving orientation, giving training, being an intermediary before and after the hiring.

“Today I commit myself to do everything in my power to generate conditions for employment and for Costa Rica to grow, I know that Costa Rica is capable of doing it,” said President Alvarado.

In April, the results of the most recent survey of the Center for Research and Political Studies of the University of Costa Rica show that 25 percent of the Costa Rican population perceives unemployment as the country’s main problem followed by the cost of living, mentioned by 21 percent of the surveyed people.

In February the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) reported that during the first three months of this year, from January to March, the unemployment rate was 11.3 percent, which is equivalent to approximately 276,000 people unemployed.

In addition, the percentage of people with informal employment was 44.9 percent, which means an increase of 3.8 percentage points with respect to the fourth quarter of 2017. This is equivalent to 971,000 people with informal employment.

Informal employment includes any activity of those who work and generate some income outside the “formal work” as defined by the Labor Code. Informal employment includes street vendors, gardeners, and domestic service workers, among others.
