Costa Rica awarded at the Global Sustainability Forum

The Ministry of Environment has reported that the country was awarded the United Nations Global Sustainability Forum Prize, organized by LUISS University* in Rome. The Global Sustainability Forum was established in 2016 as a non-profit organization and is based in Rome, Italy.

The goal of the Forum is to explore the complex issues surrounding sustainability from economic, financial, environmental, social and political points of view.

The recognition is due to the country's achievements in environmental protection, promotion of sustainable progress and the launch of the National De-carbonization Plan. Traditionally, it is given to companies for its good environmental practices. This is the first time it has been granted to a country.

"We have been able to use nature conservation to direct our development agenda, thanks in large part to the fact that our predecessors began to build our society with solid principles and values," said Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, Environment Minister.

The Minister says Costa Rica has obtained excellent results in environmental work and that the National De-carbonization Plan is "a great opportunity that will allow an important transformation and will serve as a model for other countries."

Five women accompanied the minister as he collected the prize: three councilors Giovanna Valverde, Amarilli Villegas, Carla Sierra, secretary Ileana Ordóñez and the director of the foundation Fundecooperación, Marianela Feoli.

The Global Sustainability Forum seeks to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreements on Climate Change.

Related to the action of the government to decrease the use of fuel in public transport services, in December 2018, as A.M. Costa Rica reported, the government announced $750,000 loan for a study of an electric cargo train.

The loan agreement was signed between the Costa Rican Railway Institute and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration to finance for the installation of an electric cargo train in Limón*.

A feasibility study aims to objectively and rationally uncover the strengths and weaknesses of an existing business or proposed venture, including opportunities and threats presented in the natural environment, the resources required to carry through with the project, and the prospects for success. In its simplest terms, the two criteria to judge feasibility are a cost required and value to be attained.

The President of Institute, Elizabeth Briceño and the representative of Costa Rica before the CABEI, Ottón Solís signed the agreement. President Carlos Alvarado was present as the witness of that agreement.

Otton Solís who was a deputy from 2014 to 2015 represented the actual government party: Citizens' Action Party (PAC). Now he is the representative of the international bank.

According to the Institute plan, the electric train would travel from the town of Valle de la Estrella to the towns of
Limón*, Río Frío* and Chilamate*.

The estimated cost of the study is $750,000 (of a budgeted total of $450 million).

The plans of the institute include the total cost of the electric train that will transport cargo. Among the benefits of this electric train service are the modernization of rail transport with clean and renewable energy. The train is scheduled to start in the second half of 2020. The Costa Rican Electricity Institute will build the wiring that transmits electrical power to the train.

The president confirmed that this first electric train for the transport of cargo is part of the government’s work to promote a railway culture, a culture that sees trains as a positive part of national development.

According to the Institute, this loan was signed under the "Project Finance" modality which means, it must be a project with a guarantee of generation of cash flow (or sufficient income) to repay the loan to CABEI Bank.
