70 percent of Costa Rican seniors
have hypertension, say specialist

Studies of epidemiological surveillance unit of Social Security reveal that 7 out of 10 adults over 65 are hypertensive. The female population is the most affected with this silent disease.

Dr. Daniel Salas Peraza, Minister of Health, Dr. Román Macaya, President of Social Security, gave information on the impact of this disease on the population.

Hypertension (HTN or HT), also known as high blood pressure (HBP), is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. High blood pressure typically does not cause symptoms. Long-term high blood pressure, however, is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral vascular disease, vision loss, chronic kidney disease, and dementia.

Dr. Salas called on people to improve healthy life habits to reduce this condition, which is a risk factor for brain and cardiovascular diseases that constitute the first cause of death in the country.

One of the major concerns raised by Dr. Macaya is that more and more young people are diagnosed with this condition.

Social Security studies show that 15.2 percent of the group between 20 and 39 years old was diagnosed with this disease that is about 250,000 people.

Hypertension has been shown to be associated with other cardiovascular diseases since three out of 10 hypertensive patients in Costa Rica have diabetes as a collateral disease, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease in the future.

Social Security statistics show that in Costa Rica there are more than 1 million patients in treatment for hypertension. More than ¢3 billion has been invested in treating hypertensive patients and more than 43 thousand emergency calls of patients with this disease have been treated.

Specialists give the advice to keep the disease under control:

- Give up smoking.

- Control your weight. Remember that being overweight adds an extra burden to your heart.

- Reduce your salt intake and consume healthy foods that do not increase your cholesterol level.

- Avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages, as this substance increases the pressure in your arteries.

- Regularly perform some physical activity. Choose a simple program that you can maintain, and do it regularly, even if you are walking 30 minutes a day.

- Reduce stress. If you relax, your blood pressure will improve.

- Adhere to the letter with the treatment prescribed by your doctor.

- Know the numbers of your blood pressure: Normal 120/80. High about 140/90.
