More than 13,000 drivers fined
for parking in a prohibited zone

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

According to the statistics of the Traffic Police, in the first four months of the year (from January to April), 13,988 drivers were fined for illegal parking.

This is the second most common infraction, only exceeded by the fines for driving with a prohibited number plate for which 18,811 fines were registered in the same period.

According to German Marín, director of the Traffic Police, parking in a prohibited area "reduces from two to one, the traffic lanes in a very crowded road and also, creates problems for buses when they need to do a turn in a corner."

Another prohibition that many drivers do not understand or do not know is to park near a corner, "because a car parked near to the corner, causes lack of visibility for other drivers, which increases the risk of accidents," said Marin.

According to the Traffic Police Director, most people park in a forbidden place deliberately, "they know they should not do it but they do it," said Marin.

An example of a very common error is parking less than 5 meters away from a corner or a ramp for people with disabilities.

Police officers say that most of the drivers' excuses, when they are fined, are that they were only parking for a few minutes meanwhile they were waiting for somebody.

The prohibited parking area is marked with yellow paint on the edge of the sidewalk. Some sites also have a sign that warns on parking not allowed.

According to the Traffic Law, the cost of the parking ticket is approximately $100.

On May 16, as A.M. Costa Rica reported, the transit police confirm that everybody can reach the Juan Santamaría airport by car, taxi, shuttle or bus.

The police make the clarification due to false information that has circulated in social networks that police closed the entrance of the Juan Santamaría airport to vehicle traffic for a supposed increase in security.

According to German Marín, director of the transit police, anyone traveling to or picking up a passenger who arrives in the country can enter through the public entrance ramps of the airport. No officer will prevent the entry of vehicles at the entrance to the airport.

The airport has designated the public entrance areas in the usual way, and it is also indicated the entry areas of the personnel working in the airport, the loading and unloading area of merchandise and other services.
Airport taxi, bus or shuttle has designated a specific area near to main entry.

The only way people could be fined would be for illegal parking in areas with a yellow line on the curb, or with signs indicating ‘no entry’.

"Many people enter the airport and want to park as close as possible to passengers entering or leaving, to load or unload suitcases, and this is forbidden because there is a notice that warns," said director Marin. “What you must do is enter the parking area and not in a restricted area."

The parking area is right in front of the main entrance. Parking fee cost approximately $2 per hour.

According to the transit police, many people seek to park in front of the passenger entrance claiming that they will only be parked a few minutes while loading or unloading the suitcases.

In addition, the police confirmed that they have increased the controls to detect illegal transport, known as pirate taxi or Uber, "since this type of private taxi service has been increasing at the Juan Santamaría airport."
Nobody should not arrive at the airport in Uber.

According to the traffic police statistics, from January to April, were fined 2,286 drivers for working illegally as private transport service.
