U.S. Government donated more than $600,000
to Costa Rican Supreme Court of Justice

The Directorate of Restorative Justice of the Poder Judicial, a homologous organization of the Supreme Court of Justice, and U.S. National Center for State Courts, NCSC, will strengthen the expansion and development of new opportunities for the minority population in conflict with the law, with a donation of $667,848.75 from the office for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. Embassy.

This donation is part of the second phase of the Cooperation Project Program between the Supreme Court of Justice, the U.S. Embassy and U.S. National Center for State Courts, which aims to contribute to the access to justice for this population through the Restorative Juvenile Justice program that is being developed in the towns of San Carlos*, Pococí*, Puntarenas*, Limón* and south zone*.

"For the Supreme Court of Justice this program is cause for celebration. I wish to express a grateful thanks to the U.S. Embassy for all the support and collaboration given to this project, counting on them is invaluable for Restorative Justice in the country," said Patricia Solano, Vice President of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Gloria Berbena, representing the U.S. Embassy, said "supporting the Restorative Justice Program and the young people is an investment in the future of Costa Rica and its citizen security and it is an investment that has paid off. Hundreds of young people have gone through the program and the rate of recidivism has been less than four percent. This kind of success is worth replicated throughout Costa Rica."

"We are proud to have been part of the first stage of the project and to continue our support in this second phase," said Berbena. "It is a program that has changed lives, that has transformed communities and hearts and that has strengthened the ties with the most vulnerable young people in Costa Rica."

According to Javier Rodríguez, Coordinator of U.S. National Center for State Courts, "our commitment to work and technically assist with all of you and our struggle for recognition of the strengthening of the rule of law and access to justice for all people as a fundamental pillar of Costa Rican democracy."

Restorative Justice is a methodology that encourages young people in conflict with the criminal law to be sent to alternative prison programs. This allows a decrease in recidivism and the strengthening of the reintegration of these young people to their families and communities.

According to the Supreme Court of Justice, this project will allow training on Restorative Juvenile Justice, creation and updating of instruments of action, strengthening of community capacities, activities against offenders, and for victims, among others.

This is the second phase of support for Restorative Justice Program in Costa Rica. The first phase, lasted three years was developed with a donation of over $1,300,000 by International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
