Plan B pill could be purchased without a prescription

The Ministry of Health approved the sanitary registrations of the Plan B pill, so that anyone can buy the pill without a medical prescription.

Plan B pill is levonorgestrel, a hormonal medication which is used in a number of birth control methods. In pill form, sold under the brand name Plan B among others, it is useful within 120 hours (five days) of a sexual act as emergency birth control. It becomes less effective as time elapses between the sexual act and use of the pill and only works before pregnancy has occurred.

"This is an emergency contraceptive, the effectiveness is applied at 72 hours post-coital and it increases much more its effectiveness if it is taken during the first 12 hours post-coital," said Daniel Salas, Minister of Health. For that reason "If a prescription is required, the pill process will be delayed and it is hours that play an important role for the medication to take effect."

As A.M. Costa Rica reported on April 26, the use of the Plan B pill was approved by the Ministry of Health.

After reviewing the documents submitted by the pharmaceutical company Geodon Ritcher PLC, the Ministry of Health approved the drug registration Levonorgestrel.

According to the Ministry, the pharmaceutical company must perform the quality tests of the first batch which are in process in the Pharmaceutical Analysis and Advisory Laboratory of the University of Costa Rica. After the approval of the laboratory results, the pharmaceutical company can start the sale of the pill.

On March, the Social Security specialists announced the use of Plan B pill only when a victim has been raped. Under that plan, when a woman requests the Plan B pill in the Social Security clinic, she must provide proof of the report by submitting a copy of the report of the medical test made by a forensic medicine specialist of the Judicial Investigation Organization.

Social Security said it would apply its own protocol - a medical test if the victim - before authorizing the use of the Plan B pill. It only is authorized to prevent or interrupt pregnancy caused by rape within 72 hours of the criminal act. This means that the victim must request the treatment form Social Security within a maximum period of three days after the criminal act.

According to the Health Ministry resolution, now the Plan B pill could be purchased at any pharmacy without a prescription.

The price and date that the pill can be sold on drugs stores will be announced by pharmaceutical company Geodon Ritcher.

Levonorgestrel was patented in the U.S. in 1960 and introduced for medical use together with ethinylestradiol in 1970.

The World Health Organization reports that the pill is on the list of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.

The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services says that the pill is available as a generic medication. The wholesale cost is between $0.23 and $1.65 for the required dose for emergency birth control. In the U.S., it is over the counter for all ages. In 2016 it was the 223rd most prescribed medication with more than 2 million prescriptions.
