Event in favor of medical marijuana canceled by police

On Saturday, officers of the Ministry of Security along with officials from the Municipality of Alajuela and representatives of that municipality canceled an event in favor of the use of medical marijuana known as ‘The 2019 Cup’ that was being held on private property that is rented for events in the town La Garita* in Alajuela.

According to Daniel Calderon, Director of Fuerza Publica, the owners of the property where the event was to be held could have lost the right to rent their property for future events because the Municipality of Alajuela had not given permission for the marijuana event to be held.

"In conjunction with city officials, we went to the place and verified that this place is special to organize events. So the municipality proceeded to notify them for not having authorization. And the event was closed immediately. Also now what comes is an investigation so that the owners could expose themselves even to the loss of the Patent."

Regarding people detained or seized marijuana, Calderon reported that "Several people were searched outside the place, there were several seizures of marijuana, and the police remained outside to ensure that the order to close the activity was respected."

In the beginning, the event was scheduled to be in Puerto Viejo de Limón. However, the police believe that the organizers moved it to La Garita de Alajuela in an attempt to avoid the authorities.

"When they realized that this activity was filtered to the press, they changed the place several times. They finally made it La Garita de Alajuela, we had information that would do the activity outside of San Jose, possibly in Old Port. But finally, we knew that it was going to be done in Alajuela and we proceeded to do the operation to go and inform them that they should evict in the absence of an authorization from the municipality to do that event. After the eviction the place was closed," said Calderon.

According to the police report, there were no detainees in the area, but "small amounts of drugs were seized," Calderon said.

According to the Costa Rica Cultiva CRC organization, which participated in the 2019 Cup event, on May 4 there will be a march in San José, to request support for the promotion of marijuana as medicinal use.

According to the organization, the goal of the march is:

- To promote the public’s awareness about the therapeutic and medicinal use of Cannabis and ask that it be allowed and supported.

- That the right to self-cultivation and self-supply of Cannabis plants be respected, as a medicinal and therapeutic source, establishing clear policies that prevent the unjustified persecution of those who grow it.

- That in a prompt manner, the matter is scheduled in the Legislative Assembly in order to establish a Law that safeguards, protects and protects the development of the local industry.

- That under no circumstance is the business of the production of medicinal Cannabis delivered to pharmaceutical companies and foreign laboratories.

The use of marijuana in Costa Rica is illegal.
