Costa Rican population perceives unemployment as the country's main problem / A.M. Costa Rica wire services photo

Costa Ricans worry about unemployment, says a poll

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The results of the most recent survey of the Center for Research and Political Studies and the School of Political Sciences of the University of Costa Rica show that 25 percent of the Costa Rican population perceives unemployment as the country's main problem followed by the cost of living, mentioned by 21 percent of the people surveyed.

Traditionally, unemployment has been ranked between the first and second place in the mentions as one of the main problems of the country.

It is important to note that people in the province of Limón* show a greater concern than the national average regarding this problem (39 percent), followed by Guanacaste* (34 percent), unlike San José*, where only 19 percent consider it a problem.

The cost of living and the economic situation is the main problem (24 percent) in the capital.

Regarding President Carlos Alvarado’ government, 50 percent of the people have a negative perception of the government, while 27 percent rate it positively and 22 percent of the respondents have a neutral assessment.

If we compare this result with the measurements made in August and November of 2018, we observe that positive and negative perceptions do not show significant variation.

Parallel to the assessment of the government's management, the pessimism about the economic situation of the country shows a slight decrease with respect to the month of November, however, it continues above the historic levels shown on the subject.

This poll also consulted the population about the possession of weapons.

According to the data obtained, 61 percent of the people surveyed oppose the purchase of firearms. Among women, the rejection of the acquisition of weapons is higher (69 percent) than among men (51 percent). In
Guanacaste*, 69 percent of those polled oppose weapon possession, the highest percentage in any province. Those who live in Heredia* and Limón* oppose weapons less, with 54 percent and 50 percent respectively.

Two out of three respondents (67 percent) support restricting the number of weapons allowed per person to one, compared to a third of the sample that is against this restriction. The vast majority (90 percent) opposes the ownership of weapons like AKs by citizens.

Added to this, the majority of the population (83 percent) supports the existence of stricter controls for the possession of weapons. It should be noted that the percentage of support to establish more controls is 90 percent among people with a university education, seven percentage points more than the percentage of the total sample.

The methodology used by the researchers was a survey was carried out on Costa Rican citizens with cell phones, which covers approximately 97.5 percent of the population1.

Based on the sampling frame of the National Numbering Plan of the Superintendent of Telecommunications (SUTEL), random sampling was carried out. 998 telephone interviews were completed for people over 18 years of age on March 25, 26 and 27, 2019 during the morning, afternoon and evening (from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.).

With the interviews, and using a confidence level of 95 percent, a sampling error of ± 3.1 percentage points is estimated. This means that any generalization made based on these data should strictly refer to the population with a cell phone and not to the population as a whole.
