Hospital activated protocol for 23 babies
due to risk chickenpox outbreak

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The hospital San Juan de Dios* in San José,  activated its contingency plan for chickenpox after treating a newborn with chickenpox. The infant was transferred to the National Children's Hospital*.

The baby was born prematurely at 31 weeks and was admitted to the Neonatal Unit for the required care.

On March 14, vesicles were found on the infant’s skin. These are a common manifestation of chickenpox so the child was transferred to the children's hospital.

According to Dr. Manuel Ramírez, infectious disease specialist, "the baby presented [with] chickenpox while being admitted to the Neonatal Unit, which means that the other 23 newborns who were in Neonatology were exposed."

Dr. Ramírez said that due to the behavior of this virus, all those children should be kept under observation for a period of 28 days. This does not prevent neonates who’s health improves from being discharged.

During the 28 day period, there is a high-risk that the babies could infect others so the Neonatal Unit will not receive any new patients during that period.

Chickenpox is transmissible from two days before the outbreak appears on the skin. During that time you cannot know if someone is a carrier of the virus.

The results of the doctor’s examinations of the newborns could be ready as of March 19.

Dr. Ileana Balmaceda Arias, general director of the Hospital, said "it was coordinated with nursing to address the parents who have their children hospitalized in Neonatology, also with the Occupational Health Unit to follow up on the officials who were in contact with the patient and a temporary Neonatal Unit is being prepared for the care of new patients. "

Among the precautionary measures that were taken in the hospital are:

- Isolation of the Neonatal Unit, new patients will not be admitted from today until April 1.

- Transfer of newborns requiring basic neonatal care to the Desamparados Clinic in San José.

- Restriction of admission to the Neonatal Unit to visit the 23 isolated newborns. A person may only enter if dressed in personal protective equipment provided by the nursing staff, which includes mouths, gown, apron, and gloves.

- The visit is suspended for other relatives of the babies.

- An interview is being conducted with the parents of the interned children in order to know some important information, for example, if they (the parents) are vaccinated or if they had chickenpox. This is to authorize their admission.

- Strict monitoring of minors in the period of manifestation of the virus (March 19 to April 1).

- An area in recovery is being enabled to use as a neonatal care unit to hospitalize critically ill new patients.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease. Another such disease entered the country with a French family. A.M. Costa Rica reported on the case in February.

The three tourists, father, mother and 5 year old child who arrived in the country on February 18, were reportedly infected with the disease in France.

According to doctors, the child and his mother had not been vaccinated against the virus and the father did not have a complete vaccination record. According to the testimony of the parents, some of the child's classmates had measles.

The family had remained in isolation in the Hospital Monseñor Sanabria in Puntarenas*, for the standard seven day period set by national and international precautionary standards to prevent the spread of the virus.

Social Security had activated the isolation protocol because there are no local cases of transmission of the measles virus.

The family was placed in a closed room with ventilation, negative pressure, restricted access and medical care that maintained all the biosafety protocols.

Social Security has not reported the costs of the week-long medical service provided to the family, but it did confirm that the government will cover the child's expenses under the Code of Childhood and Adolescence. The international insurance company Europ Assistance France will pay the cost of care for the parents.
