Vaccination campaign against Rotavirus begins

Social Security has announced the start of a vaccination campaign against the rotavirus which will be accessible and free for children in all clinics, or Ebais, in the country.

Dr. Leandra Abarca, coordinator of the vaccination program, said, "these vaccines were acquired by the Ministry of Health and the National Vaccination Commission for the protection of children."

Rotavirus is a genus of double-stranded RNA viruses in the family Reoviridae. Rotaviruses are the most common cause of diarrheal disease in infants and young children.

Social Security announced that this campaign is expected vaccinate 87,000 children against the rotavirus. The vaccination scheme is two doses that are administered at two and four months of age.

In countries where a vaccination program has been implemented, there has been a reduction in hospitalization rates for acute diarrhea disease ranging between 30 and 50 percent.

The only babies who cannot receive the vaccine are those with:

• Known hypersensitivity after previous administration of the vaccine or to any component of the vaccine.

• History of intestinal intussusception.

• Uncorrected congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract that could predispose to intestinal intussusception.

• Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome (SCID).

Dr. Abarca Gómez said this vaccine is very important since it prevents the diarrheal disease caused by this microorganism which infects practically all children in their first years of life and is the main cause of severe diarrheal disease in the childhood population.

The virus affects children under five years of age at least once and occurs more frequently in rainy seasons.

In Costa Rica, the time when there are most cases of this disease are the months of August through September.

The rotavirus prevents the absorption of water in the intestines causing liquid diarrhea and excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes which can result in severe dehydration and even death.

Rotavirus transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route, with an exposure time of fewer than 20 minutes and an incubation period of fewer than 48 hours.

The virus lasts up to 10 days and usually produces the following symptoms.

• Diarrhea

• Vomiting

• Fever

Rotaviruses are the most common cause of diarrheal disease in infants and young children.

• Abdominal pain

• Abdominal distention

• Dehydration

Dr. Elenita Ramírez, responsible for epidemiological surveillance, said that in 2018, of every thousand inhabitants under the age of five, 125 had a severe acute diarrheal disease.

The World Health Organization has stated that the vaccine against rotavirus should be part of the strategies to prevent diarrheal disease.

Other actions that should be taken to prevent this type of illness are:

• Use of vaccines in the regular scheme.

• Promotion of early and exclusive breastfeeding.

• Hand washing with soap and water.

• Consumption of pure drinking water and basic sanitation.

• Good food handling.

• Good access to the health system

For specialists, the introduction of this vaccine is a great achievement because it allows the general population to reduce the severity of diarrheal diseases and reduce complications and hospitalizations for this cause.
