President Alvarado continues work tour in
the U.S. to seek more investment for Costa Rica

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

President Carlos Alvarado continues his work tour in the United States, visiting some of the country’s most important company.

His goal is the increase of foreign investment in Costa Rica, generating opportunities for employment and transforming the country into a center for scientific and technological production.

In a first meeting with the directors of Starbucks in Seattle Washington, the president said that "Costa Rica shares the roots of Starbucks in the construction of its history through the best coffee in the world." He added that, "another of the points addressed in the meeting was the possibility that the international company could invest in Costa Rica in domestic services."

In 2012, Starbucks opened its first retail store in the country. Now the company has opened 12 stores and according to Casa Presidential, the company has plans to have 25 stores by 2020.

On Tuesday, the president arrived at Silicon Valley in San Francisco, CA, to meet with senior managers of some important technology companies.

In a meeting with Cesar Cernuda, president for Latin America at Microsoft, President Alvarado asked him to expand operations in Costa Rica. He said that "Costa Rica currently hosts an important part of Microsoft's support operations, but now we want to be home to its technological and scientific production. We have the human talent and the greatest willingness."

Cesar Cernuda confirmed that Microsoft will increase the staff in 2020, with new offices that will be located in the Universal Tower in Sabana Sur, which is in the process of being built. "We will be one of the pioneers in locating us there in 2020, consolidating our total operations in the country and with the capacity to continue growing."

Additionally, President Alvarado met with executives of Amazon, whom he asked to consider increasing the number of employees in the offices that the company already has in Costa Rica.

"My request to you is to increase the number of virtual jobs so that the supply of quality jobs reaches more corners of the country," said President Alvarado to Amazon directors.

Amazon started operations in Costa Rica in 2008 with 75 workers and currently has an operation with a payroll of more than 7,000 people in its offices in Heredia and San José.

President Alvarado then met with Jeremy Bailenson, founder of the Virtual Human Interaction Lab at Stanford University.

Explaining the reason of that meeting, the president said that "the visit focused on learning about the latest trends in the area of virtual reality to explore possibilities to turn Costa Rica into a hub of innovation in this area."

According to Jeremy Bailenson, during the visit of President Alvarado "We had two wonderful hours doing some demonstrations of virtual reality (VR) and then talking about how we can take this technology to Costa Rica."

President Alvarado will also visit Google, Samsung, and Hewlett Packard.

The president travels in the company of Jorge Sequeira general director the Costa Rican Coalition of Initiatives of Development and Dyalá Jiménez, Minister of Foreign Trade.
