A true report on the country's magical residents

A fairy tale by James Brodell Kelly
A.M. Costa Rica editor emeritus

No one really knows how they got to Costa Rica. Perhaps they traveled with Columbus and disembarked at Limón* in 1502. Maybe they came on an empty banana boat much later.

Another theory is that fairies, being magical creatures, may have their own ways of travel. Maybe they were here since antiquity.

Nevertheless, the truth is that fairies and leprechauns are well ensconced in Costa Rica.

Tourists are not told this. The presence of the fairy clans are a deep secret, although a few developers wish they had known earlier. At best, tourists are told about the high percentage of biodiversity without being told about the tiny guardians.

As everyone knows, fairies and even the solitary leprechauns are territorial. They like their space and guard it vigorously. Wise government officials knew this, and that is why so much land here is protected from incursions.

Every once in a while someone builds a home or even a large subdivision on fairy land. They suffer the consequences, be it a troublesome landslide or the reluctance of certain water company officials to provide service.

No one would knowingly cross the fairies.

With St. Patrick's Day approaching, giving some advice to the newcomers seems to be appropriate. After all, the fairies have their ancestral roots in Ireland. And journalistic integrity requires that the truth be revealed.

Some visitors might wonder why a couple of major hotels in San José and on the Pacific coast have large green areas within their boundaries. Of course this is to placate the fairies who lived there long before construction began. Sometimes they can be heard splashing around in the swimming pools at night. The guards know and keep their distance.

A builder would be a fool to put a structure over the home of fairies. A little known office in most municipalities is that of fairy inspector, an employee who surveys land, communes with the hidden occupants and gives advice to builders.

Some expats may remember when the environment minister went missing in Cocovado National Park* a decade ago. He showed up a few days later with an implausible story of being knocked down by a mama dante or tapir protecting her young. More than a few Costa Ricans nodded knowingly because the pristine park in southwest Costa Rica is like the Vatican for resident fairies.

At best, tourists are told about the high percentage of biodiversity without being told about the tiny guardians.

Some say the truth is that the wee folk took the environment minister before the full fairy council where he was read the riot act about open pit gold mining and petroleum exploration. Fairies and their leprechaun cousins are particularly fond of gold for ornaments and dish ware. They do not like competition for resources. He was lucky they didn't pull a Rip Van Winkle on him.

That encounter in Corcovado may be why Costa Rica suddenly changed course on both these extractive enterprises.

Visitors and expats need not fear the little people who spend most of the time out of sight. They just need to tread gently in the fields and forest. Leave nothing but footprints, as they say.

Fortunately Costa Rica is not home to the evil branch of the family, the faeries, who do nothing but create trouble.

Some say it is the happy disposition of Costa Ricans that discouraged the mischievous faeries from settling here.
