German airline Lufthansa includes Costa Rican
products on its international fair stand

Lufthansa, considered the largest airline in Europe, is promoting flights at the ITB tourism fair in Berlin, Germany, where part of its display is a cafeteria offering its customers coffee produced in Costa Rica.

The Ministry of Tourism reports that the cafeteria’s decorations include images of a suspension bridge with the country brand Essential Costa Rica.

In addition to providing its customers Costa Rican coffee, Lufthansa gives them postcards with birds and other symbols of Costa Rica’s nature.

The Ministry said this is the first time that Lufthansa has allowed a business partner, Costa Rica, to have a presence inside its stand. This is due to a cooperative campaign negotiated by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute and the German airline.

María Amalia Revelo reports that ITB Berlin could be visited by 110,000 people during weekdays and 160,000 on the weekend.

There is no data to indicate exactly how many people enjoyed coffee at the airline stand or how many people have received a postcard.

Ministry officials said that ITB Berlin is the largest tourism fair in the world, with 79 percent of the professional buyers who visit it from European countries, but that others come from America, Asia, and other continents.

"This allows both national entrepreneurs and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute to concentrate and attend tourism negotiations with clients in one place without the need for additional tours," said Revelo.

Juan Carlos Borbón, marketing director of the tourism institute, said, "since the six continents and more than 180 countries are represented in this international fair (including destinations considered a Costa Rican competition), it is possible to explore the new trends they offer the tourist markets."

The Costa Rican Stand at the Berlin fair it includes executives from 38 tourism companies plus executives of the Tourism Institute.

All these companies have a Tourism Sustainability Certificate allowing them to participate in these fairs.

Among the strategies used to attract the attention of visitors at the fair, the Costa Rica Stand will show videos through virtual glasses.

The video includes a horseback ride, surfing, rafting, and a canopy tour, among other activities. In addition, visitors will taste goodies such as biscuits and coffee.

Among other attractions is artisan Rolando Alvarado who has more than 35 years of experience painting typical carts. He will explain to the public the history of this national symbol and demonstrate the art of painting carts.

Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, provide the following data on European tourists:

-In 2018, there were 480,102 tourists from Europe.

-Of that total, 74,574 were Germans tourists.

-Germany is the most important tourist market in European countries.

-The second place is the United Kingdom with 74,338 tourists.

-The third place is France with 74,032 tourists.

-On average, Germans stay in the country an estimated 16.7 nights.

-With regard to spending, on average a German tourist spends $143.16 per day.

ITB Berlin takes place every year in March and is organized by Messe Berlin GmbH.
