Government approved more than $21 million
investment in infrastructure in Limón province

The government, through the National Emergency Commission, approved the amount of ¢13.037 million colones (about $21,416,015) for infrastructure improvements in the province of Limón*.

A portion of that budget, said the commission, equivalent to ¢3,000 million colones (about $4,928,131) will be used for the construction of 38 projects that will allow communities to reduce the impact of emergencies by reworking riverbeds, dams , bridges and roads, among others.

Another portion of the budget, equivalent to ¢8,000 million colones (¢13,141,683), will be invested in infrastructure improvements in the communities of Guácimo, Talamanca, Siquirres, Pococí and Matina, province of Limón*.

The Commision plans to use ¢2 billion colones (about $3,285,420) to invest in 11 roads, rebuild a bridge and make other improvements in the cantons of Bataan, Guapiles, Cahuita, Sixaola and Rio Blanco.

A reconstruction of a highway in Cahuita district, Talamanca, is currently underway for ¢37 million colones (about $60,780).

Alexander Solís, president of the Commission, said "it is fundamental to work on the protection, reconstruction and studies of public infrastructure to avoid reproducing the vulnerability in the communities before the events that may arise due to natural and climatological factors."

The Commission also said that part of the investment will also be used to purchase, "inputs such as mineral salts, concentrated feed for maintenance and deworming for livestock in the communities of Colorado and Cariari."

As A.M. Costa Rica reported, in July 2018 President Alvarado declared the state of emergency for the Atlantic zone after tropical storm #18 entered the country bringing several days of rain to the Caribbean Coast.

Storms caused many floods and landslides throughout the country, but the major impact was on the Atlantic coast.

Last year, President Alvarado visited the zones most affected by the floods and landslides in the Atlantic zone and officially declared them to be in a state of emergency.

Such a declaration can generate economic resources for official institutions, such as the ministries of Health, Public Works, Education, electricity, and water services providers and the commission for national emergencies.

The state of emergency allowed the acceleration of aid to the people living in the most affected areas.

Last year, the National Commission of Emergencies established that the populations most affected by the emergency were living in Talamanca, Matina, Limón, Siquirres, Pococí, Sarapiquí and Turrialba.
