Police arrest two German citizens at the
airport for trafficking in spiders and ants

Officials of the Juan Santamaria Airport* police in Alajuela, with the collaboration of German officials, detained two German citizens, surnamed Goldnik, 22, Ollesch, 54, for animal trafficking.

According to the police report, agents received a call yesterday from officials of the National Animal Health Service, who suspected that a German tourist intended to leave the country with several species of invertebrates. The Costa Rican agents had received a police alert from Germany about a man who already had a history of trafficking in animal species.

Agents at the airport set up an additional luggage screening for people leaving the country.

"The airport police inspected the luggage of the suspects, recovering the species that were inside the checked baggage. There they located several small containers with spiders and live ants," said the police in their report.

The animals were confiscated by the officers of the National Animal Health Service and the suspects were sent to cells of the Public Ministry waiting for a judge to determine the pre-trial measures.

In relation to the detention of foreigners at the airport, the most recent case reported in A.M. Costa Rica was the case involving the arrest of a Canadian citizen at the Guanacaste airport

Last Friday, officers of the General Directorate of Immigration at the Daniel Oduber International Airport* in Guanacaste, arrested a Canadian citizen surnamed Den-Hann who had a criminal record and links to a criminal and drug trafficking gang.

The police report that when Den-Hann entered at immigration control post, workers found that he had a criminal record and was allegedly part of a gang linked to drug trafficking and organized crime. They refused to allow Den-Hann into the country.

Stephen Madden, deputy director of the Migration Professional Police said "the mechanisms of migratory control and the execution of the police actions by the immigration officers, allow us to continue ensuring national security, especially avoiding the entry of foreigners with dangerous profiles or cases in which Costa Ricans are involved, also ensuring their safety and compliance with the law."

Immigration police report that Den-Hann was sent to immigration cells to await the next flight to Canada.

In another case, reported in A.M. Costa Rica on January 7, officials of the border police in Golfito* detained an U.S. citizen, surnamed Mohns, age 38, as having two arrest warrants from the state of Florida.

According to the police report, Mohns was identified by officials during a regular operation carried out in the town of Puerto Jiménez in Golfito*.

During that police action, the officers were checking the papers of foreigners in the area and found that the identity documents from Mohns placed him in an irregular migratory status.

The problem with his U.S. passport alerted the local police who researched information on international warrants provided by the U.S. police. That search confirmed that Mohns has two active arrest warrants issued in 2018.

"The first arrest warrant was issued by the State of Florida for the crime of aggravated assault and attempted robbery with a gun. The second alert was issued by Virginia for the crime of drug possession," said the border police report.

In addition to the two arrest warrants, police report that Mohns has an extensive criminal record in the U.S. for possession of drugs, violence against the authorities, robberies and for violating traffic laws.

The border police took Mohns to the Immigration Detention Center in Paso Canoas, where he was extradited to the United States.
