Roundabout in Zapote will be closed Wednesday

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Ministry of Public Works reports that it is moving two sculptures from the roundabout of Social Guarantees in Zapote*. That area will be closed on Wednesday the 30th for two hours, from 10a.m. to noon.

Carlos Jiménez, Manager of the Executing Unit, said that the move will take place after the most damaged sculpture is provided with the protection requested by the Costa Rican Museum of Art.

Jiménez reports that they have been working on building an ‘exoskeleton’ for the sculpture to provide it with that protection. They will more another sculpture on the same day.

The ministry states that there will be an interruption of traffic on Wednesday at about 7a.m. so that a crane can be moved to the roundabout. The interruption should last about five minutes and traffic police will be on site to guide vehicles through the work area. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to proceed with caution and respect traffic signals at the site.

The statue is being transferred to another location during the construction of a new viaduct in the area.

On January 15th, President Alvarado inaugurated the construction of a viaduct at the Social Guarantees traffic circle in
Zapote*, San Jose. The viaduct is being financed by a loan of $17.6 million from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration.

Alvarado said that the work is important for “the economic reactivation of the country. I appreciate the effort and dedication of Minister Mendéz to advance decisively in these projects."

The viaduct will have a length of 864 meters, with an overpass of 550 meters.

According to the Minister of Public Works, Rodolfo Méndez, the overpass will have six lanes, three in each direction (upper step) and two in each direction in the lower area for a total of 500 meters in length.

"The first jobs that will be executed are the relocation of public services by the National Company of Electricity,” said Méndez. Subsequent phases will allow vehicular traffic. There will also be a remodeling of the current roundabout and then construction of an overpass.

Throughout the process, traffic police will maintain a presence to regulate access to the work areas in order to guarantee the free flow of vehicles. Drivers are advised to try to use alternative routes that avoid the construction area.

The work will be developed in four phases:

1. Transfer of the monument of Social Guarantees, tree removal and relocation of public services will be finished on Wednesday.

2. Construction of west and east ramps enabling central lanes to maintain the flow of traffic during the construction stage.

3. Work on the bridge on pre-excavated piles and beam header, modification of the current rotunda, construction of a bridge 103 meters long and re-installation of the monument to Social Guarantees.

4. Construction of the viaduct. The main shaft will be excavated and the bridge and pylon screens must be built. The transit on Route 39 will be maintained on the ramps previously built, with two lanes in each direction.

According to the ministry's work plan, construction is scheduled to be completed in 12 months and will require approximately 120 workers. The Office of the United Nations of Projects and Services is the executing agency on this construction and the MECO Company will be in charge of the construction.
