Deputies suspend sessions due to flu outbreak |

The Legislative Assembly confirmed the closure of sessions on Wednesday, by recommendation of the health department, because of an outbreak of influenza known as flu type A, which has infected four deputies. According to the medical department of the legislature, the sick deputies are: Carolina Hidalgo, president of the legislature, Deputy Wagner Jiménez, Deputy Laura Guido and Deputy Marolin Azofeifa. All were declared incapacitated by the legislature medical department. In addition to the suspension of the sessions, Deputy Nielsen Perez confirmed the cancellation of the forum that was scheduled to analyze article 121 of the Penal Code on Therapeutic Abortion. The legislature’s press department reported that the decision to suspend the sessions was given to allow for fumigation and extensive cleaning of the chambers in order to avoid a further outbreak. Local media reports that deputies Hidalgo, Guido and Azofeifa had been infected during a trip to Washington D.C. last week. They had been invited to the U.S. by Congress for meetings and discussions. The medical department of the legislature, however, said that no one can be sure that the deputies were infected during the trip as outbreaks of the flu are typical in Costa Rica at this time of year. The invitation to the training was extended by the Ambassador of the United States, Sharon Day. During their stay in U.S., they participated in training and exchange ideas and experiences in matters of governance and security with special emphasis on the role of women in the political process. This program was designed for female legislators and took place from January 12 to 19. The legislators that attended the meetings were: -Carolina Hidalgo, president of the Costa Rican Legislature. -Laura Guido of the ruling party Partido Accion Ciudadana. |
