Government obtains $56.6 loan for improvements on Limón sewers |
|
By A.M. Costa Rica staff The government announced the new loan of more than $55 million from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration. In addition to this amount, the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts (water mains) and Sewers and the National Service of Groundwater will add more than $1.6 million for this project. The total amount of more than $56.6 million will finance the improvements in the sewers of Limón* in the Atlantic Coast. The Central American regional economic integration process began on 1960, with the signing of the General Treaty on Central America Economic Integration, which included the establishment of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration. The signing of the loan took place yesterday at the Presidential House, with the participation of President Carlos Alvarado Quesada and the Costa Rican representative of the Central American bank, Ottón Solís. After signing the loan, the president reaffirmed his promise to improve the health conditions in coastal areas. "This project will allow us to improve the lives of the people of Limón," said President Alvarado. Ottón Solis said the loan is for improving access to basic services in "the areas classified on the maps as regions in extreme poverty." According to the government, the loan will be spent on two projects. The first part of more than $42 million will be used to build 7,776 residential sanitary sewer connections in the towns of Limóncito*, Envaco*, Pueblo Nuevo* and Los Baños*. The second part of more than $14 million, will be used to build flood mitigation systems in the lower basin of the Limóncito River in Limón. |

The loan must be paid within 20 years, but cannot be executed until the final approval of the deputies. For that reason, President Alvarado made a call to the legislators for approval of the loan. According to the last report of the National Institute of Statistics, 32.35 percent of the population is living in conditions of poverty. ---- Is asking for more loans a good government strategy?
