U.S. Coast Guard helps seize 990 kilograms of cocaine off Pacific Coast |

Costa Rica staff In an anti-drug operation carried out on New Year Eve, the U.S. Coast Guard issued an alert to the coastguard in Costa Rica, indicating that a boat suspected of transporting drugs had been detected southwest of the border with Panama. The Ministry of Security reported that the patrol agreement between Costa Rica and the United States allows alerts to be received when there is suspicion of drug trafficking. The alert, said the report, referred to a case of possible maritime transportation of drugs in the Pacific area, southwest of the border between Panama and Costa Rica. The Coast Guard reported that the suspicious vessel started to change course when its crew noticed a U.S. patrol plane and a Costa Rican vessel were approaching. The report adds that the suspects threw packages into the sea about 89 nautical miles from Golfito bay* and 137 nautical miles from Quepos in Puntarenas*. When the Coast Guard officers arrived at the scene they recovered 50 packages containing the drug shipment. The packages contained 990 kilograms of cocaine. The seized drugs were sent to the Public Ministry as evidence in the investigation and for ultimate destruction. |
