The Pax Natura International
Foundation delivered the Pax
Natura 2019 Prize to Christina
Figueres Olsen on Tuesday
afternoon. She is a Costa Rican
leader recognized worldwide for
her struggle on issues related
to climate change.
Pax Natura is a 20 year old
foundation which actively
promotes "Peace with Nature"
through health, ecological and
social welfare. It is an
organization with members in the
U.S.A. and Costa Rica.
The award was created in 1998
and is presented annually to
distinguished members of the
international community whose
life’s work exemplifies the
highest ideals of: Peace with
Nature.
Christiana Figueres Olsen is a
Costa Rican diplomat with 35
years of experience in high
level national and international
policy and multilateral
negotiations.
Figueres held the position of
Executive Secretary of the
Framework Convention on Climate
Change from 2010-2016.
She led conferences in Cancun
(2010), Durban (2011), (Doha)
2012, Warsaw (2013) and Lima
(2014), and was part of the
historic Paris Agreement 2015
which was approved by 195
countries.
The agreement aims to fight
against the effects of climate
change, defined as the important
changes that the planet has been
suffering for several decades
and that are the result of
emissions of greenhouse gases
(GHG) that cause global warming.
According to Christiana
Figueres, "for the first time in
the history of the planet, it is
not nature, nor the natural
cycle that is determining
conditions, but for the first
time, we human beings.” She went
on to say that it is our
responsibility to come to terms
with nature, to maintain the
natural world and accept our
responsibility to improve the
planet. She added that we have
to decide under what conditions
the future generations will
live.

Mrs.
Christiana Figueres, for
the first time in the
history
of humanity, has led the
creation of a unique
agreement among all the
nations of this planet.
According
to Randall
Tolpinrud,
President of the
Pax Natura
Foundation, "Mrs.
Christiana
Figueres, for the
first time in the
history of
humanity, has led
the creation of a
unique agreement
among all the
nations of this
planet for the
conservation and
protection of
life, as we know
it. Her
contributions have
been an example in
very diverse
topics. The Costa
Rica REDD +
Program has been
replicated in many
parts of the world
and served as a
model in the Paris
Climate
Agreement."
Tolpinrud said
that Costa Rica
will be the first
carbon neutral
country in the
world and its laws
for the
conservation of
forests,
biodiversity and
marine protection
have shown the
world that
economic
development, based
on environmental
protection, is the
only way to make a
human civilization
sustainable.
